AIT Sheepskins are derived from major Export Registered Meatworks in all states of Australia where Skins are graded and processed directly from Green at the Meatworks or immediately thereafter at associated processing plants. All Skins are pulled with minimal take-off damage.

AIT productions are predominantly processed in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. The majority of Australian Skins are purebred merino and fine/medium crossbred types.

Whilst there is always strong demand for Victorian/New South Wales productions, our West Australian material is also well sought after as these merino and merino cross types are lighter pelted, and very suitable for the lining trade as well as other specific applications where light weight is a key factor.

Sheepskins are generally available throughout the year in various wool lengths, and are classified with reference to:

• Bare to 1/4 Inch
• 1/4 to 1/2 Inch
• 1/2 to 1 Inch
• 1 to 2 Inch
• 2 Inch Up

Density of wool fibre is indicated by the ‘wool count’ which is always specified at time of offer. The finer wools have the higher wool count e.g.

60/64’s – pure merino fine wool
58/60’s – broad/good style merino
56/58’s – merino/comebacks
50/56’s – broad merino cross
46/50’s – coarse wool crossbred

Offers are generally made on basis of 50’s up or 50’s down.

Generally classified into two categories:

• Good to Super (GS) indicates wool of good colour. Free or
nearly free of burr and/or seed

• Ordinary (ORD) can include light to moderate burr and/or
seed, discoloured or moderately damaged wool

Good shape, with main panel free of flay marks and knife cuts. Clean fresh stock. May include some light rib,
especially in neck area.

May include some light/medium rib with occasional but minimal neck and/or flank cuts and/or faults. May be of slightly asymmetric pattern, but minimum 95 percent of cutting area to be free from faults.

May include two or three holes within 100mm of the edge of the skins, and one small hole in main panel. Can include medium/heavy rib.

Normally average approximately 5.5/6.5 square feet. Misshapen skins and/or skins with a large hole, or more than one small hole in main panel.

All combinations of these classifications are available depending on seasonal conditions.
